It’s almost spring! That means it’s nearly time to shed the oversized parkas and trade them in for lighter, less bulky outerwear! Huzzah! But not all jackets are created equal. So we wrangled 6 sustainable jackets that are perfect for spring so you can step out in eco-friendly, outdoorsy style this season.
OK, so it may not quite be windbreaker weather where you are yet, but it will be soon, so if you’re itching to say sayonara to snow and ‘sup to spring flowers and showers and slightly warmer weather, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared! Houdini Mono Air Houdi
A cross between a jacket and a fleece mid layer, the Mono Air Houdi is built for the outdoors and super sustainable. It sheds a fraction of the microfibers that fleece does (read about the problem with micro plastics in this post), which is awesome, but it’s also a stunning example of circular manufacturing, which means it’s made of recycled materials, but it can also be recycled at the end of its life! That’s about as sustainable as you can get when it comes to synthetic apparel. It’s wind and water resistant, has thumbholes and an adjustable hood and hem, and is stretchy enough to make it an ideal layer for all kinds of outdoor activities, including cycling, climbing and hiking. Find the women’s Houdi here and the men’s here.
Kühl Revolt
Could there BE a softer, comfier lightweight jacket? We didn’t even know nylon could be this soft! But we love the Revolt for its versatility: It’s a hybrid jacket, which means it has Primaloft 55% recycled synthetic insulation in part of the sleeves and body, but stretchy, breathable material makes up the side panels and under the arms. This makes it the perfect jacket for every activity, from hiking to climbing to backpacking to running errands around town. It’s comfy, but it’s also warm and makes a great outer layer for spring and an excellent mid layer for colder temps. Find the men’s Revolt here and the women’s here.
United By Blue Packable Windbreaker
We love United By Blue for their cool clothing and sustainable lifestyle goods (we can’t live without their portable utensil kit), but we love them more for their commitment to sustainability. Not only do they sell products that are good to the planet, the do good FOR the planet. For every item sold the brand cleans 1 pound of trash from public waterways. Every season there’s a great jacket worth owning from United By Blue, but this season we love the packable windbreaker, which is also waterproof and stuffs into a fanny pack! Sure, plenty of jackets pack down into their own pocket, but this might be the only one that’s still wearable when it’s stowed away! Find the women’s version here and the men’s here.
Patagonia Nano Puff
Patagonia has set the standard for sustainable outdoor clothing. So it’s no surprise that their NanoPuff insulated puffy jacket is so dang popular. It’s made with super sustainable Primaloft P.U.R.E. synthetic insulation (which you can read about here) and the lining and shell are recycled, too. It makes a great spring jacket for the outdoors, sure, but also an excellent mid-layer if spring regularly reverts to winter where you live. Plus, they come in lots of colors! Yay! Find the men’s Nano Puff here and the women’s here.
The NorthFace ThermoBall Eco
Love a lightweight puffy for cool spring days and nights? We don’t blame you. And The North Face has got the goods when it comes to sustainable spring jackets. The ThermoBall Eco is cozy, but not too cozy, made entirely from recycled materials and insulation, and makes a great outer layer or mid layer. It has a DWR finish to help you stay dry in spring showers, but it’s not PFC-free (read about PFC’s in this post). That said, it’s still a stupendous option for early season adventures! Find the men’s ThermoBall here and the women’s here.
Helly Hansen LIFALOFT Hybrid Insulator Jacket
Love a quality, sustainable hybrid jacket for spring weather? Helly Hansen has you covered. A brand that puts sustainability at the forefront, many of their jackets utilize recycled or recyclable materials. The LIFALOFT Hybrid Insulator Jacket, for example, features Primaloft synthetic insulation and PFC-free fabric made of recyclable polyamide. The men’s and women’s jackets look a smidge different, but the front and back of the jacket are insulated while the sleeves are made of a durable stretch material for full range of motion no matter what the heck you’re doing outdoors! Check out the women’s jacket here and the men’s here.
