Honestly, I have a hard time deciding what to call the cuisine Lick It Up passes through that food trailer window. I suppose it’s Mexican. Made by someone who knows Mexican food. Very near the border of Mexico. But it’s technically located in Texas, so does geography dictate whether it be called Mexican or Tex-Mex? I dunno. But who cares. Because when vegan Mexican street food is this good (and this fast), what you call it really doesn’t matter. After all, a rose by any other name and all that…
But on the fence surrounding the patio it does say Mexican, so we’ll go with that.
Cuisine aside, Lick It Up happens to be the only dedicated vegan joint in El Paso. There are a handful of other places (like coffee shop/bakery stunner Savage Goods) that are vegetarian, but this trailer has a corner on the market (also, it’s literally on the corner). Owner Pato serves up all manner of (Tex?) Mexican delicacies: quesadillas (my fave), tortas (Josh’s fave), tacos, gorditas, even flautas. And they rock. I was licking vegan cheese off my fingers for a good 15 minutes after I finished my (exceedingly messy) meal. My mom would have been mortified, but you can’t waste flavor like this by wiping it into a napkin, OK? It’s a compliment. Also, I have a firm belief that if you’re either eating food from a food trailer (check) or dining al fresco on a cement patio with mismatched tables and chairs (check), finger-licking is totally and completely acceptable. (So get off my case, mom!)
We chatted with Pato a bit before we gorged ourselves and loved learning about his passion for flavor and ingredients (Jackfruit! Seitan! Mushrooms!). After all, can’t good food just be good food? It just happens to be vegan! Vegan Mexican street food, that is. Check out our video on the trailer below!
