The Ultimate Ultralight Backpacking Gear Kit: 8.2lb Base Weight!

I’ve been backpacking for over two decades now. And over that time, I’ve become more and more of an ultralight Backpacker. Meaning, I prefer to carry as a little weight as possible, no matter how long of an excursion I am embarking upon. So I decided to go all in. I upgraded my entire backpacking kit to include only the most ultralight gear I could find to test it out and see if it was worth the weight savings, the cost, and the lack of feature-rich gear. So I took it all out on a recent weekend trip, and will break it all down for you right here, right now, and let you know if some of the most ultralight backpacking gear in existence today makes for a better backpacking experience or a more miserable one.

Kayak Camping in Everglades National Park: Spend the Night on a Platform on the Water

Imagine paddling through water that perfectly reflects the blue of the sky. There’s so much open space and so few other people you feel like you have the whole bay to yourself. Jellyfish float by, maybe a dolphin or two. If you’re patient you might spot a ray (and probably more than a few small lemon sharks minding their own business). Mangrove-lined keys dot the horizon and after hours of paddling, you finally spot it in the distance, your campsite for the night: A wooden platform standing a dozen feet or so above the water, outfitted only with a portable toilet, a slanted roof, and a few ladders. It’s a chickee and it might be the coolest place to camp in Everglades National Park. But what’s involved in kayak camping in the Everglades, reserving a chickee, and making your way out to one? And what should you bring along to help guarantee a successful trip? Read on, wanderer. Read on.

Sun Shirts: Does Anti-Odor Technology Really Work? [Review]

We love a good sun shirt here at Terradrift. Not necessarily because of any UPF claims (if you read our post on UPF clothing you know it doesn’t really offer more protection than other clothing for most outdoorists), but because we love shirts designed to cover our delicate epidermis, wick sweat, and dry quickly all at the same time! Bonus if there’re infused with any sort of anti-odor properties so that when we wear them for four days in a row on the trail, we don’t smell so bad we make our campmates pass out. So we tested out a few rad sun shirts recently to see how they performed in the great outdoors, what they were best for, and whether or not their anti-odor technology was all it was cracked up to be. Here are our faves.
